Pakistan joined the global community in observing World Press Freedom Day on Saturday, with top leadership reaffirming their commitment to protecting and promoting a free and responsible media.

This year’s theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” focuses on the evolving challenges and opportunities AI presents for journalism and press freedom.

In their separate messages, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to journalists in Pakistan and around the world for their dedication and sacrifices in the pursuit of truth.

President Zardari emphasized the essential role of media in fostering dialogue, exposing corruption, advocating for marginalized communities, and raising awareness on critical social, economic, and environmental issues. He called a free press “indispensable” to a healthy democracy.

Prime Minister Sharif echoed these sentiments but also highlighted the need to safeguard press freedom while preventing the misuse of media platforms. He stressed the importance of combating misinformation, fake news, and propaganda, warning against their use in advancing political or foreign agendas.

The Prime Minister also praised the Pakistani media’s responsible reporting in response to recent tensions with India, including its firm stance on exposing New Delhi’s water-related actions and unsubstantiated allegations.
