Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following India’s missile attacks on Pakistan on May 6, which killed 31 civilians and injured over 50 others. In retaliation, Pakistan’s military shot down five Indian jets and nearly 30 drones, according to Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt. General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry.
Pakistan’s Defense Response
Pakistan’s air defense systems are continuously monitoring Indian drones, with capabilities to track even small unmanned aerial vehicles. Lt. Gen. Chaudhry confirmed that all drones entering Pakistani airspace are being closely watched by radar, with operational protocols in place to neutralize potential threats, including those near civilian areas or commercial flight paths.
International Responses
U.S. Vice President JD Vance urged both countries to de-escalate tensions, expressing concern over the situation, but noted that America would not intervene directly. Meanwhile, Russia and China expressed deep concerns over the growing conflict, calling for restraint from both nations to avoid further escalation.
Pakistan’s Stance on Indian Aggression
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed a “befitting response” to India’s missile strikes, condemning India’s actions as “cowardly” and a violation of international law. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif also reaffirmed that any future Indian provocations would be met with strong military retaliation, while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed that Indian forces admitted defeat by raising a white flag at the Line of Control.
Tensions and Diplomacy
The escalating situation has prompted the National Security Committee (NSC) of Pakistan to authorize its military to respond to Indian aggression at a time of its choosing. The NSC reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The UN has called for de-escalation, urging both nations to exercise maximum restraint to avoid a military conflict between two nuclear-armed neighbors.
As the situation continues to unfold, diplomatic efforts and military actions remain at the forefront of international attention, with both countries on edge following the recent attacks and counterattacks.
