Neeraj Chopra Delays Javelin Competition Due to India-Pakistan Tensions

BENGALURU (RNN TV) — Indian Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has postponed his namesake javelin event, the Neeraj Chopra Classic, scheduled for May 24 in Bengaluru, amid heightened military tensions between India and Pakistan — the worst escalation in nearly three decades.

The World Athletics Gold category meet was expected to feature top international athletes including Anderson Peters, Julius Yego, Thomas Roehler, and Curtis Thompson. However, the decision to defer the event follows the suspension of both countries’ premier Twenty20 cricket leagues in response to the ongoing conflict.

Chopra’s team made the announcement via social media on Friday, stating the decision was made “after careful thought and consultation” with the wellbeing of athletes, stakeholders, and the broader public in mind.

“We believe in the unifying power of sport,” the statement read. “But in this critical moment, standing firm with the nation matters most. All our gratitude and thoughts are with our Armed Forces, who are at the forefront for our nation.”

Chopra had previously ruled out the participation of Pakistani Olympic medallist Arshad Nadeem, citing national sentiment following a deadly militant attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir — an incident India blamed on Pakistan without presenting evidence. Pakistan rejected the allegations as false.

As tensions soared after Indian strikes on alleged “terrorist camps” inside Pakistan — claims Islamabad denied — Chopra confirmed that a revised schedule for the postponed meet would be shared in due course.
