
ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing Pakistan’s agriculture sector to achieve self-reliance and boost economic development.
Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad on Thursday to review progress on agricultural reforms, the Prime Minister highlighted the immense potential of the sector and stressed the need for sustainable development.
He directed authorities to facilitate farmers by ensuring easy access to agricultural loans and emphasized the importance of investing in agricultural research to strengthen national growth.
Calling agriculture a key pillar of Pakistan’s economy, Shehbaz Sharif noted that the country is blessed with fertile land, skilled agricultural experts, and hardworking farmers. He urged officials to leverage these strengths through strategic planning and innovation.
The Prime Minister instructed the formulation of a long-term, sustainable agro-industrial development policy aimed at promoting agriculture, enhancing forestry, and addressing climate change. He also stressed the importance of developing a coordinated national strategy in consultation with all relevant stakeholders, including provincial governments.
In a push to modernize the sector, he called for the presentation of a National Agri-Innovation Plan, acceleration of reforms in the seed certification system, and the promotion of high-quality seeds through a robust action plan.
Highlighting the government’s priority to introduce modern technology in agriculture, Shehbaz Sharif also directed the creation of a comprehensive regulatory framework to guide and support the sector’s growth.
Proposals from the working group on agricultural reforms were also presented during the meeting. Among those in attendance were Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, and other senior government officials.
