On Tuesday, Justice Sarfraz Dogar officially took oath as the Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr. The event was attended by senior government officials, legal experts, and members of the judiciary.
President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath to Justice Dogar, who steps into the role at a time when the judiciary faces numerous significant legal and constitutional challenges. His appointment comes amid a broader debate over judicial reforms and the need for increased transparency and accountability within the system.
Notable attendees included Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, alongside prominent lawyers and judges.
During the ceremony, President Zardari extended his congratulations to the new Chief Justice and expressed hope that Justice Dogar would uphold impartiality and fairness, strengthening the credibility of the judicial system. Justice Dogar succeeds Justice Aamer Farooq, who retired earlier this year.
The day also saw similar ceremonies in other provinces. In Karachi, Justice Muhammad Junaid Ghaffar was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court. Governor Kamran Tessori administered the oath at a historically significant venue where Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had once taken oath as Pakistan’s first Governor-General.
Meanwhile, in Peshawar, Justice SM Atiq Shah was sworn in as Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court. Governor Faisal Karim Kundi led the oath-taking ceremony, attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, federal ministers, and other officials. Governor Kundi praised Justice Atiq Shah and expressed hope that he would strengthen the province’s judiciary through integrity and effective leadership.
Together, these appointments mark an important moment for Pakistan’s judiciary as it navigates complex political and constitutional issues in the year ahead.
