India has issued a measured response to the signing of a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, stating it is monitoring the development and will evaluate its potential impact on national and regional security.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India had been tracking reports of the pact.
“We have seen reports of the signing of a strategic mutual defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan,” Jaiswal said, noting that the arrangement had been under discussion for some time. He described the agreement as a formalization of a long-standing security partnership between Riyadh and Islamabad.
The spokesperson stressed that India would carefully assess the broader consequences of the accord.
“We will study the implications of this development for our national security as well as for regional and global stability,” he said, adding that India remains fully committed to safeguarding its strategic interests.
Jaiswal further underlined that India’s defense preparedness remains “comprehensive and multi-dimensional,” assuring that New Delhi would continue to protect its national security across all domains.
On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan finalized a landmark defense agreement, under which both nations pledged to defend one another in the event of external aggression. The accord also places Pakistan in a formal role in safeguarding the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah.
Signed by the leadership of both countries with active support from Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Syed Asim Munir, the agreement represents a significant step in deepening bilateral defense ties. It builds on decades of military cooperation, including joint training exercises and defense industry collaboration.
The pact is designed to strengthen collective deterrence, enhance operational integration between the armed forces of the two countries, and contribute to broader regional stability. It underscores the shared commitment of Riyadh and Islamabad to safeguard peace while providing mutual benefits in security, economic, and diplomatic domains.
