ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir has drawn international attention for his decisive leadership in the wake of heightened tensions with India following the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

In a report published Monday, The New York Times acknowledged Gen Munir’s shift from a low-profile figure to a prominent voice shaping Pakistan’s military and strategic response. The paper noted his symbolic address to troops atop a tank during military drills, where he vowed a swift and forceful reply to any Indian aggression.

The report described Gen Munir as a staunch opponent of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, citing his background as head of both ISI and Military Intelligence. Analysts quoted in the piece characterized him as a “hard-liner” on India, grounded in the belief that the core conflict is ideological.

Gen Munir’s increasing public role, the NYT noted, signals a more assertive posture from Islamabad, with his leadership marking a break from the traditionally reserved stance of Pakistan’s army chiefs. His commitment to national security, counterterrorism, and regional stability was also highlighted by the US Central Command’s journal Unipath earlier this year.
