ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — Awami National Party (ANP) Central President and Senator Aimal Wali Khan has submitted a privilege motion in the Senate against Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Hafeezur Rehman, alleging that he disrespected the entire Parliament during a functional committee meeting.
While presenting the motion, Senator Aimal Wali briefed the House about the incident, claiming that the PTA Chairman insulted Parliament and demanded immediate action. Expressing frustration, Aimal Wali declared that parliamentary standing committees had lost their significance and announced his decision to withdraw from all future committee proceedings.
Leader of the House, Senator Ishaq Dar, endorsed the motion, after which Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani referred the matter to the Privileges Committee for further examination.
In response to the allegations, PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman issued a clarification, stating that his comments were made in a light-hearted manner and that he had no intention of disrespect. He emphasized that he neither used unparliamentary language nor meant to offend anyone. Rehman also mentioned that he had already apologized during the committee session if his remarks were misunderstood.
Reaffirming his respect for the Senate and its members, including the family of Senator Aimal Wali Khan, the PTA chairman said the controversy stemmed from a misunderstanding and criticized the social media campaign against him as baseless.
The matter now rests with the Senate Privileges Committee for review.
