ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) – The National Assembly Standing Committee on Interior, chaired by MNA Khurram Nawaz, has approved the Citizenship Amendment Bill, allowing overseas Pakistanis who previously surrendered their nationality to reclaim their Pakistani citizenship.

During the session, officials from the Law Ministry explained that the bill seeks to resolve a long-standing issue affecting Pakistanis who had to renounce their citizenship after acquiring nationalities from countries without dual nationality agreements.

“We are proposing amendments to restore Pakistani nationality for those who lost it upon acquiring citizenship in other countries,” a ministry representative told the committee.

The Director General of Passports added that while Pakistan lacked dual nationality agreements with 22 countries in the past, new agreements have now been signed, removing the need for renunciation in many cases.

Committee Chairman Khurram Nawaz welcomed the move, stating: “We fully support this bill. Overseas Pakistanis should not have to choose between their new lives and their homeland.”

Zartaj Gul Urges Autonomous Passport Authority

PTI leader Zartaj Gul Wazir used the platform to call for a dedicated and autonomous passport authority, citing the department’s strong revenue performance and operational efficiency.

“If NADRA can operate independently, the passport department should be given the same status,” she asserted, praising the current leadership of the DG Passports.

Arms License Reform and Security Updates

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry provided updates on arms license policy, confirming that provinces have resumed issuing licenses. He noted that each MNA would receive one license with the prime minister’s approval. While licenses for prohibited bore weapons have reopened, they will be distributed sparingly and only on MP recommendations.

Chaudhry also revealed that Saudi authorities had deported 4,300 undocumented Pakistani nationals, whose passports have now been cancelled.

FIA Stability and Anti-Begging Legislation in the Works

The committee also discussed reforms within the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). MNA Jamshed Dasti criticized the instability caused by frequent leadership changes. In response, Talal Chaudhry urged lawmakers to support institutions and avoid unwarranted criticism.

Meanwhile, the government is drafting legislation aimed at professional beggars. The proposed law would create a system for registering and tracking habitual beggars, imposing penalties, and curbing illegal border crossings via third countries such as Iran and Turkey.

“These individuals leave through legal channels but later cross borders illegally,” said Chairman Khurram Nawaz. MNAs Raja Khurram Nawaz and Agha Rafiullah echoed the concerns, calling for stricter oversight.
