Fawad Khan’s upcoming Bollywood film, Abir Gulaal, has been banned in India following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. Indian authorities have linked the attack to Pakistan, leading to widespread condemnation and calls for boycotts of Pakistani artists.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has issued a directive banning all Pakistani artists, including Fawad Khan, from participating in Indian film projects. The organization emphasized that any member collaborating with Pakistani talent would face disciplinary action. Additionally, political groups such as Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have threatened to obstruct the film’s release in Maharashtra, challenging the filmmakers to release it in the state.
Despite the backlash, Fawad Khan condemned the Pahalgam attack as a “horrific incident” on his social media platforms. The film’s release, initially scheduled for May 9, 2025, now faces uncertainty due to the escalating tensions.
The controversy surrounding Abir Gulaal highlights the ongoing challenges faced by cross-border collaborations in the Indian entertainment industry amidst strained diplomatic relations.
