The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has launched separate cases against three prominent social media figures — Rajab Butt, Anas Ali, and Hurairah — accusing them of luring followers into gambling through online betting apps.
Officials confirmed that the cases were registered in Lahore under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) along with sections related to fraud and other offenses. Investigators allege that the influencers acted as brand promoters for betting platforms, persuading people to invest their money with the promise of quick profits.
Authorities revealed that prior to the legal action, the influencers had been served with official notices instructing them to cease such promotions. Despite the warnings, they allegedly continued to advertise and endorse gambling applications on their channels.
The NCCIA stated that thousands of citizens fell prey to these schemes, resulting in massive financial losses amounting to crores of rupees. The matter has sparked serious concerns about the exploitation of digital platforms for fraudulent financial activities.
On September 6, the agency formally summoned several well-known YouTubers and social media personalities in connection with the inquiry. Rajab Butt, along with Iqra Kanwal and Muhammad Anas Ali, was directed to appear before investigators on September 9 for questioning.
Rajab Butt, who commands one of the largest followings on YouTube in Pakistan, has been identified as the central figure in the case. According to the NCCIA, he allegedly:
-
Encouraged young people to put their savings into online gambling apps.
-
Used his digital platforms to promote betting and trading applications.
-
Took part in a coordinated effort to mislead the public and unlawfully profit from their losses.
The agency warned Butt and others that failure to comply with summons would be treated as an admission that they have “nothing to present or state in their defence.”
