LAHORE (RNN TV) — Mian Muhammad Azhar, father of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar, former Governor of Punjab, and Member of the National Assembly, has passed away.
According to family sources, Mian Muhammad Azhar had been ill for a long time and was under medical treatment. He breathed his last in Lahore.
In the 2024 general elections, Mian Azhar contested from NA-129 as an independent candidate backed by PTI and won the seat. He later joined the Sunni Ittehad Council in the National Assembly.
He had previously served as the Governor of Punjab and was regarded as one of Pakistan’s senior and seasoned politicians. In recent years, he was a known supporter of PTI and remained politically active until his final days.
In June 2023, his son Hammad Azhar claimed that his 88-year-old father had been detained by the police and taken to an undisclosed location. However, two days later, Hammad confirmed that Mian Azhar had safely returned home.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Mian Muhammad Azhar and extended her condolences and sympathies to the grieving family.
May Allah grant him a high place in Jannah and give patience to the bereaved family.
