Google Photos is rolling out a new feature aimed at streamlining how users interact with facial recognition technology.

Currently in the testing phase for version 7.26 of the Android app, the update introduces a row of face thumbnails beneath each photo, displaying individuals detected in the image.

This enhancement allows users to quickly spot faces without extra swipes or taps. While the thumbnails don’t currently show names, it’s expected that users can tap on each thumbnail to view more information about the identified individuals.

The feature is designed to make it easier to locate photos of specific people, speeding up navigation through large photo collections.

Although this update could improve user experience, it also takes up valuable screen space, potentially limiting the visibility of other interface elements. Google is likely to refine the design, adjusting controls based on the context and type of image being viewed.

The update builds on Google Photos’ existing facial recognition capabilities, which automatically sort photos into “Face Groups,” making it easier to search for images of specific people or pets.

The new row of face thumbnails aims to further enhance this functionality, with a full rollout expected in the future.
