PM Shehbaz Announces 100,000 Merit-Based Free Laptops for Students Nationwide

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has unveiled a plan to distribute 100,000 free laptops to outstanding students across Pakistan, ensuring the process remains strictly merit-based.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the International Youth Day ceremony in Islamabad, where the premier emphasised that merit, not connections or political influence, would determine laptop allocation.

Nationwide Distribution
The laptops will be distributed among students from all four provinces, the federal capital, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The initiative aims to empower talented youth and enhance digital access for higher education.

Eligibility Criteria
According to official guidelines, applicants must be enrolled in recognised public-sector universities and pursuing a PhD, MS/MPhil, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree. They must maintain a minimum CGPA of 2.80 or 60% marks.

First-year university students will be assessed based on their Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) results, while first-semester MS and PhD candidates must submit results from their previous degrees.

Quota System
The programme includes reserved quotas, with 18% of laptops allocated to higher education students in Balochistan and 5% set aside for distance-learning students.

Application Process
Eligible students can apply by registering through the Prime Minister’s Digital Youth Hub (DYH) mobile app or visiting the PM Youth Programme’s official website at www.pmyp.gov.pk.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to providing opportunities for the nation’s youth, stating that education and technology remain central to Pakistan’s development vision.
