The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday expressed strong dissatisfaction with the federal government for failing to submit a report on Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s release, health, and potential repatriation.
During the hearing, Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan questioned the government’s inaction and asked why Pakistan had not explained its refusal to support Dr. Siddiqui in her legal proceedings in the United States. He warned that if the report is not submitted promptly, the court could summon the entire federal cabinet.
“This court can initiate contempt proceedings not only against the cabinet but also against the Prime Minister,” the judge stated, giving the government three days to comply.
However, upon request from the Additional Attorney General, the court granted five working days for the report to be filed, extending the deadline to next week.
The court also addressed a related petition seeking a meeting between Dr. Siddiqui’s sister, Fauzia Siddiqui, and the Prime Minister. Justice Ejaz questioned the utility of such a meeting, asking, “What would Fauzia Siddiqui accomplish by meeting the Prime Minister?”
The hearing was adjourned until July 21.
