India has announced an immediate ban on imports from Pakistan following heightened diplomatic tensions after a deadly attack on tourists in Indian Illegally Occupied Kashmir (IIOJK). The country’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued a notification stating that the ban is effective immediately, citing national security and public policy concerns.

The notification, dated May 2, revealed that a provision had been added to India’s Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023 to block the direct or indirect import or transit of goods originating from Pakistan until further notice.

In response, Pakistan has also halted imports from India.

The escalation comes after suspected militants killed at least 26 tourists in an attack in the Pahalgam area of Kashmir. The region has been a hotspot for conflict, with a history of wars, insurgencies, and political standoffs.

India has accused Pakistan of being involved in the attack, though Islamabad has denied these claims. Pakistan, on the other hand, has raised concerns about potential Indian military action, claiming to have “credible intelligence” regarding such plans.

Following the attack, India threatened to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty in retaliation, prompting Pakistan to take several countermeasures, including stopping border trade, closing its airspace to Indian flights, and expelling Indian diplomats. Pakistan also warned that any attempt to block the flow of river water under the treaty would be seen as an act of war.

Trade between the two countries has significantly reduced over the past few years. The recent attack has led to increased tensions, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC), where both Indian and Pakistani forces have exchanged gunfire.

The UN has called for maximum restraint to avoid further escalation. The violence is not confined to the border area, as Kashmiris across India are facing increasing violence, with protests, candlelight vigils, and a general shutdown observed after the attack.

In addition, Muslims in India have faced rising mob violence, with racist accusations linking them to the attack. There are growing fears that if tensions are not defused soon, the situation could lead to a wider conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.
