India has signed a contract with France to purchase 26 Rafale fighter jets for its navy, according to the country’s defense ministry. This multi-billion-dollar deal includes both single and twin-seat aircraft.

The new Rafales will complement the 36 French-made jets already acquired by India, as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize its military. The purchase was first announced in 2023 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France for Bastille Day celebrations.

The Rafales, manufactured by Dassault Aviation, are intended to replace Russia-made MiG-29K jets on Indian aircraft carriers. The Rafale-Marine model is designed for carrier-based operations and has proven capabilities in maritime environments. The jets are expected to be delivered by 2030, with training for Indian crews taking place in both France and India.

The deal also includes training, weapons, and logistical support, further strengthening India’s defense ties with France. This marks another significant step in India’s diversification of military hardware suppliers, alongside its historical relationship with Russia and other key partners like the United States and Israel.
