ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) — India has alerted Pakistan about a high flood risk in the Sutlej River, warning of severe flooding downstream at Harike and Ferozepur from 8am today.
The Indian High Commission shared the information with Pakistani authorities, prompting the Ministry of Water Resources to issue alerts to provincial governments and relevant institutions.
Meanwhile, a massive flood wave of 190,000 cusecs is sweeping through Burewala, destroying thousands of acres of cotton, rice, maize, and sesame crops. Several protective embankments have collapsed, allowing floodwaters to reach Sahuka, leaving farmlands devastated and farmers facing severe livelihood losses.
Adding to the crisis, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast a new spell of heavy rainfall from Monday to Wednesday, which could further aggravate the flood situation across Punjab.
According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), districts including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Murree, Jhelum, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, and Hafizabad are at risk of flooding from intense downpours. Conditions may also worsen in Chiniot, Lahore, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Layyah, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan.
Authorities have cautioned that rising flows in rivers, particularly at Marala Headworks, may cause fresh flood surges, posing threats to adjoining areas. Residents of low-lying and flood-prone zones have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautionary measures.
