Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday underscored the importance of the Indus Waters Treaty as a cornerstone of regional stability, pledging that Pakistan would take all necessary steps to uphold and enforce the agreement in the face of India’s recent actions.
Speaking at a high-level strategy meeting in Islamabad, Dar described India’s suspension of the treaty as a “unilateral and unlawful” move that violates international law, established diplomatic norms, and the treaty’s binding provisions.
“The Indus Waters Treaty is not just a legal document — it is essential for peace in South Asia,” Dar asserted. “Pakistan remains fully committed to preserving its integrity and ensuring its implementation.”
The meeting, aimed at formulating Pakistan’s official response to India’s decision, was attended by Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarrar, Attorney General Mansoor Awan, senior officials, legal experts, and former foreign secretaries.
Dar condemned what he called India’s attempts to “weaponise water,” warning that such tactics could destabilize the region. He stressed that the Indus River System is a lifeline for Pakistan’s population of 240 million, making water security a matter of national survival.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to securing its legitimate share of water under the treaty and vowed to continue advocating for international accountability and legal recourse to protect the country’s rights and long-term stability.
