In a major leap for smartphone technology, Apple is set to equip all four iPhone 17 models with 12GB of RAM, marking a significant upgrade from the 8GB found in the iPhone 16 series. This includes the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air, which will replace the current Plus model.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has already decided to include 12GB of RAM in the Pro, Pro Max, and Air models. While the final decision for the base iPhone 17 will depend on supply chain conditions, Kuo suggests it is likely that the base model will also see this upgrade. However, if not, the 12GB RAM configuration will be standard across all iPhone models with the iPhone 18 in 2026.

Why the RAM Upgrade?

The increase in RAM is driven by Apple’s focus on enhancing AI features and multitasking capabilities. With more memory, future iPhones will be able to handle more complex tasks, improving performance and reducing latency. The RAM boost will also help Apple stay competitive in the premium smartphone market, where other companies are pushing the boundaries of hardware integration.

Furthermore, the demand for AI-specific memory is set to benefit Apple’s memory suppliers, especially Micron and SK Hynix. The cost of 12GB RAM is approximately 50% higher than 8GB, offering financial benefits for both Apple and its suppliers.

Release and Expectations

The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be launched in September 2025. Whether the base model will also feature 12GB of RAM remains to be seen, but with Apple’s strategic focus on AI, the move could redefine what’s possible in smartphone performance. The shift to 12GB as the new standard is anticipated to happen with the iPhone 18 in 2026.
