On Friday, Islamabad Police arrested Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) senior leader and Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan for allegedly violating Section 144 during a protest held outside the National Press Club.
Police officials stated that JI supporters attempted to assemble despite existing restrictions under Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings in the area. “The gathering was in direct violation of the current Section 144 orders,” they said. Several other party workers were also taken into custody during the police operation.
The JI leadership condemned the arrests, describing them as an assault on democratic rights. In an official statement, the party emphasized that “peaceful protest is a constitutional right of every citizen,” and labeled the detention of their leader as unjustifiable.
The incident has drawn criticism from civil society organizations and political analysts, who argue that the enforcement of public assembly restrictions is increasingly being used to stifle dissent and curb political expression in the country.
