The National Assembly on Friday removed three senior PTI leaders from key parliamentary posts following the disqualification of several party lawmakers in May 9 protest cases.
Opposition leader Omar Ayub, parliamentary leader Zartaj Gul, and deputy parliamentary leader Ahmad Chattha were stripped of their positions, with Ayub also losing his memberships in the public accounts and finance committees.
The chamber allotted to the opposition leader was taken back, and PTI-backed independents must now submit fresh nominations for the vacant posts.
Additionally, the NA withdrew memberships of 15 standing committees from seven PTI lawmakers. Sahibzada Hamid Raza lost his chairmanship of the Human Rights Committee, Zartaj Gul was removed from the same committee, and Rai Hassan Nawaz was ousted as Railways Committee chairperson.
These moves follow ATC convictions of multiple PTI leaders — including Ayub and Shibli Faraz — who were sentenced to up to 10 years in prison over May 9 protests. Arrest warrants have also been issued for dozens of other senior PTI figures ahead of the party’s planned August 14 protest.
