LAHORE (RNN TV) — Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has thrown his full support behind Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz amid her ongoing row with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), sources revealed on Monday.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the former premier dismissed suggestions that Maryam should tone down her statements against the PPP. Nawaz reportedly said that Maryam’s remarks were a “reaction to undue criticism” from the PPP and that she had “rightly represented the sentiments of the people of Punjab.”
The exchange came after Shehbaz Sharif advised restraint, saying that a softer approach from Maryam could help ease tensions between the coalition partners.
Tensions between the PPP and Punjab government escalated further after Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon launched a sharp attack on the Punjab CM in a recent press conference, reportedly following Nawaz’s public support for his daughter.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari also reinforced Maryam’s stance, making it clear that the chief minister would not apologize for her remarks. Referring to the Cholistan water canal issue, Bukhari said Punjab had already shown flexibility despite Sindh’s protests.
“Why should Maryam Nawaz apologize for working for the rights of Punjabis?” Bukhari asked, adding that people in Sindh “wish they had a chief minister like Maryam.”
The war of words has further strained ties between the ruling allies, with both sides trading barbs as political temperatures rise ahead of key parliamentary sessions.
