Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra addressed the recent backlash on Friday after inviting his Pakistani rival Arshad Nadeem to the Neeraj Chopra Classic, scheduled for May 24 in India.

Earlier this week, Chopra extended the invitation to Nadeem for the World Athletics Gold event, which will also feature world champions like Anderson Peters, Julius Yego, and Thomas Roehler, among others. Speaking at a press conference, Chopra clarified that the invitation was subject to government approval and confirmed that the final list of participants would depend on confirmation from authorities.

However, the diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following a deadly attack in India-held Kashmir, leading to reciprocal diplomatic measures. Pakistan recently announced the suspension of trade and airspace closures in retaliation to India’s actions.

Chopra, acknowledging the criticism on social media, shared that much of the discourse had been filled with “hate and abuse.” He emphasized that his invitation to Nadeem was purely a gesture between athletes and was meant to make India the host of world-class sporting events. “It was from one athlete to another, nothing more, nothing less,” Chopra explained.

While condemning the negativity surrounding his invitation, Chopra stressed that his country’s interests always came first. “I am hurt and angry at what has transpired,” he added, expressing frustration over the targeting of his family. “My integrity is being questioned, and it pains me to explain myself when there is no reason for this.”

Chopra also mentioned how his mother’s earlier comments about Nadeem had sparked praise, but now, some have turned their criticism toward her. He reflected on his family’s simplicity and the false narratives surrounding them. “Just because I don’t speak up doesn’t mean these narratives are true,” he said.

Despite the controversy, Chopra remained resolute in his commitment to his country and his sport. “I will work even harder to ensure that the world remembers India for all the right reasons.”

In response to his invitation, Nadeem had previously expressed that, despite their rivalry, they are good friends, adding that they compete for their respective countries but maintain a lasting bond.
