Afia Siddiqui

ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday took up a petition concerning the health and repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, currently imprisoned in the United States.

During the hearing, government representatives informed the court that Islamabad has decided not to become a party or offer legal assistance in the ongoing proceedings related to Dr Siddiqui in a U.S. court.

Additional Attorney General apprised the bench of the decision, prompting strong remarks from Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan. The judge questioned the legal basis for the move, stating that such decisions require justification.

“This is a constitutional court. No one can just appear and announce a decision without presenting the rationale behind it,” Justice Khan remarked.

The court has now directed the federal government to submit a written explanation outlining the reasons for its stance at the next hearing, scheduled for July 4.
