KPK (RNN TV) — An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore issued non-bailable arrest warrants on Tuesday for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in connection with a case involving violence against police during a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on October 5.
The court also issued arrest warrants for three other PTI leaders — Hammad Azhar, Saeed Sindhu, and Shehbaz Ahmed — for failing to attend investigations despite multiple police summons.
According to the police, the individuals named were wanted in connection with the violent incidents during the PTI protest last year, where PTI workers allegedly attacked law enforcement officers.
Police officials stated that the PTI leaders were named in multiple FIRs and had been summoned repeatedly, but they failed to comply with the investigation requests.
The protests, which began with a call from PTI founder Imran Khan on September 30, were meant to support the judiciary and oppose a proposed judicial package. Protests started in Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, and Mianwali on October 2, with a large gathering scheduled for October 5 at Lahore’s Minar-e-Pakistan.
Tensions escalated during the protests in Lahore and Islamabad, where violent clashes erupted between PTI supporters and police.
On October 5, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reported that more than 80 police officers had been injured during clashes with Khan’s supporters near Islamabad. Meanwhile, Lahore witnessed severe confrontations, with both protesters and police suffering injuries.
The unrest, sparked by the PTI-led protests, escalated as law enforcement deployed tear gas in an attempt to disperse demonstrators at key locations, including Awan-e-Adal, Badami Bagh, and Sheranwala Gate. Despite the heavy police presence, many protesters resisted efforts to clear the areas, leading to further violence.
