ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) – In a sweeping digital crackdown, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked thousands of social media accounts, citing anti-state and anti-defense content.
According to a recent statement, the telecom regulator confirmed that 3,248 YouTube channels have been restricted for allegedly running coordinated campaigns against Pakistan’s defense institutions and other key state bodies. This move is part of a broader monitoring effort by state agencies to combat narratives deemed harmful to national security.
In addition to YouTube, over 100,000 URLs have been taken down for hosting content targeting Pakistan’s sovereignty and military. The crackdown also extended beyond local platforms. PTA announced the blocking of 68 Indian YouTube channels, 13 Indian news channels, and 20 Indian news websites for spreading hostile propaganda.
Two Pakistani journalists’ YouTube channels were also removed on grounds of violating national security protocols, according to PTA sources.
Efforts to regulate online content have expanded significantly, with PTA now submitting an average of 829 takedown requests daily to various social media platforms. These requests primarily target content labeled as blasphemous, unethical, hate-driven, or anti-state.
Over the past three and a half years, Pakistan has requested the removal of more than 1 million posts across digital platforms in an effort to curb the spread of what it considers harmful or unlawful content.
