Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed immediate rescue and relief efforts in flood-hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following devastating cloudbursts and flash floods that have claimed lives and caused widespread destruction.
Emergency Response at NDMA
Chairing an emergency meeting at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) headquarters in Islamabad, the Prime Minister reviewed the situation in hard-hit districts, including Buner. NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik briefed him on the damage caused by heavy rains and flash flooding.
Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured victims of full federal support. “Our sympathies are with those affected, and we will leave no stone unturned to provide relief,” he said. The PM ordered acceleration of rescue operations and urgent delivery of essential supplies, including tents, medicines, and food.
Federal-Provincial Coordination
In separate conversations with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi and Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the Prime Minister pledged comprehensive federal assistance. He instructed the NDMA to work in close coordination with provincial authorities to ensure efficient distribution of aid and prioritized evacuation of stranded citizens and tourists.
“Every resource at our disposal must be used to protect lives and provide immediate relief,” Shehbaz stressed.
Rising Flood Threats
The NDMA has sounded a high-level flood alert for the Swat River, where water discharge at Munda Headworks has exceeded 112,000 cusecs, posing a severe flood risk. Rescue teams are on the ground, working alongside local administrations to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued warnings amid the ongoing monsoon spell. Heavy rains and possible cloudbursts are expected in several districts over the next 24 hours. Commissioners and deputy commissioners have been directed to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of rivers, streams, and low-lying areas.
Rescue services, civil defense units, and health departments in Punjab have been placed on high alert, with the PDMA pledging full support to districts for emergency response.
