NEW YORK (Web Desk) — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today (Tuesday), where he will deliver Pakistan’s address and attend a high-profile multilateral meeting hosted by US President Donald Trump alongside leaders of key Muslim countries.
The prime minister, who arrived in New York on Monday with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, senior ministers, and government officials, is leading Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level UNGA session.
According to the Foreign Office (FO), PM Shehbaz will join a special meeting convened by President Trump with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Indonesia. The talks are expected to focus on Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed over 65,000 Palestinians, displaced the entire population of the enclave, and triggered a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the discussions will center on Gaza. US outlet Axios reported that President Trump will table a proposal for post-war governance in Gaza, which includes Arab and Muslim countries deploying forces to facilitate an Israeli withdrawal and contribute funding for reconstruction.
The FO said the premier would use the platform to stress Pakistan’s support for peace and security in the region, while drawing attention to the worsening situation in Gaza, which several UN experts and inquiries have already described as genocide.
Bilateral Meetings on the Sidelines
Beyond the multilateral session, PM Shehbaz is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with global leaders. These include Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, Kuwaiti Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, the World Bank president, and the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The prime minister will also attend the Global Development Initiative (GDI) meeting and other high-level UN events, including sessions of the UN Security Council and a special forum on climate action. His address at the UNGA is expected to highlight Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir, Palestine, regional security, climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, and sustainable development.
Pakistan Welcomes Recognition of Palestine
Meanwhile, Pakistan has welcomed the recent recognition of Palestine by France, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Portugal, and other states.
Speaking at the International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, Deputy PM Ishaq Dar urged all countries yet to recognize Palestine to do so in accordance with international law. Pakistan, which recognized the State of Palestine in 1988, also endorsed the conference’s outcome document — the New York Declaration.
The FO reaffirmed Pakistan’s call for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, alongside unimpeded humanitarian access. “Pakistan has consistently supported the establishment of an independent, viable, and contiguous State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital,” the statement said.
