RAWALPINDI (RNN TV) – Aleema Khan, sister of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, announced on Friday that the former prime minister has instructed the party to launch an anti-government movement after the 10th of Muharram.
Speaking to media outside an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, Aleema conveyed Khan’s message, stating that the PTI founder had expressed strong opposition to the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, suggesting that establishing a monarchy would be preferable to its implementation.
The development comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision last week to deny PTI reserved seats for women and minorities in parliament. On June 27, a constitutional bench ruled that PTI, having lost its electoral symbol, was no longer eligible for the reserved seats in both national and provincial assemblies.
Aleema said that Khan has urged the people of Pakistan to “come out for their freedom”, reiterating his belief that “imprisonment is better than slavery.” She also revealed that a detailed protest plan has already been prepared under Khan’s guidance.
Highlighting her brother’s prison conditions, Aleema claimed that Imran Khan is confined to a cell for 22 hours a day with limited access to basic rights. “All jail facilities have been withdrawn,” she alleged, adding that Khan has not been allowed to speak to his children or access books.
Drawing a comparison with PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, she claimed Sharif received home-cooked meals and hosted hundreds of visitors during his imprisonment, while Imran has been denied even basic human rights.
“For the past six months, he hasn’t been allowed to speak to his sons, which is both inhumane and unlawful,” Aleema said in a social media post. She added that as the head of the country’s largest political party, Khan has also been barred from meeting his party leadership for the past eight months, calling it a violation of his constitutional right to political consultation.
Meanwhile, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram confirmed that the party had postponed earlier protest plans first due to the Iran-Israel conflict and later out of respect for Muharram.
“All provincial presidents have finalized preparations,” Akram told Geo News. “In the first phase, demonstrations will take place at provincial and district levels.”
Responding to concerns over possible violence, Akram emphasised that PTI workers should not be targeted. “When the first bullet was fired, the PTI founder won,” he said.
Regarding controversial remarks by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur about carrying weapons to protests, Akram clarified that Gandapur referred to the right to self-defence. “What the chief minister meant was that everyone has the right to protect themselves,” he said.
