LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department announced on Thursday that it has flagged 932 social media links to its cyber patrolling cell for review.
A department spokesperson confirmed that 74 individuals have already been arrested for posting inflammatory or sectarian content online.
“The cyber patrolling cell is actively monitoring social media for content that promotes sectarianism or provokes unrest,” the statement said. “Immediate action is being taken against any posts spreading religious hatred.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards incitement on social media and urged citizens to refrain from sharing sectarian material in their posts.
Separately, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari issued a stern warning to social media users ahead of the holy month of Muharram. Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, she cautioned that anyone posting fake news or content that stirs hatred or violence would face immediate arrest.
She added that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed authorities to act swiftly and firmly against any attempt to disrupt peace during Muharram through digital platforms.
“A dedicated cyber security force will closely monitor social media in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA),” Bokhari said.
She also noted that individuals found guilty of spreading false information or inciting sectarianism could face consequences including account suspension and legal prosecution.
The measures come as part of a broader effort to maintain harmony and public safety during Muharram, a month in which tensions can rise due to sensitive religious gatherings and processions.
Authorities have reiterated their appeal to citizens to exercise caution and responsibility while using social media, stressing the importance of promoting peace and unity during this sacred period.
