The Punjab government has rolled out its first-ever e-taxi scheme, marking a major step toward eco-friendly transport and job creation in the province.

Under the initiative, a fleet of 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed in the first phase. Of these, 1,000 vehicles have been allocated to the corporate sector, while 100 taxis will be given to individual applicants. To encourage inclusivity, 30 taxis have been reserved exclusively for women drivers.

According to officials, applications can be submitted online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk. Successful applicants will receive the vehicles on five-year, interest-free instalments, with the provincial government covering all interest charges.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the scheme is designed to promote the use of electric vehicles in Punjab while providing an affordable and environmentally sustainable mode of transport.

The launch follows Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s announcement earlier this week regarding the introduction of 15 electric buses on different routes, supported by four charging stations installed at the terminal. She said the service will gradually expand to other cities, ensuring modern and clean transport facilities for more districts.

The chief minister also inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service and a new bus terminal in Mianwali, further strengthening the province’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

Back in April, the Punjab cabinet had approved a larger electric bus project aimed at deploying 1,500 electric buses across multiple cities in the province.

With the launch of the e-taxi scheme alongside electric buses, Punjab has positioned itself at the forefront of Pakistan’s green transport revolution.
