A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck parts of Turkey on Wednesday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), sending tremors through several regions and sparking concern among residents.

The quake, initially reported by GFZ as having a magnitude of 6.02, was later revised to 6.2 by other international seismological agencies. It struck at a depth of around 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), making it a shallow earthquake likely to be felt strongly near the epicentre.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) confirmed the seismic activity but had not reported any casualties or major structural damage at the time of filing this report. Emergency teams have been dispatched to assess the situation in the affected areas.

According to preliminary data, the epicentre was located in a seismically active zone, which has witnessed devastating earthquakes in the past. The region remains on high alert as aftershocks are expected in the coming hours.
