Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump as a “milestone” in Pakistan-US relations, highlighting Washington’s willingness to invest in Pakistan’s IT and other critical sectors.
Speaking to journalists in New Jersey, Shehbaz revealed that President Trump personally urged American companies to channel immediate investments into Pakistan. He said potential areas of cooperation included agriculture, information technology, energy, and minerals—with both sides agreeing to set mineral prices on fair terms.
The Prime Minister stressed that any upcoming trade deals with the United States would be anchored in reciprocity, ensuring benefits for both nations.
Unprecedented welcome and regional peace role
Sharif said his warm reception in the US was unmatched in the past four decades, likening it only to his visit to Saudi Arabia. He credited the Pakistan Army, under Field Marshal Asim Munir, for steering the nation away from confrontation with India and acknowledged Washington’s behind-the-scenes role in easing tensions. According to him, the US Secretary of State conveyed New Delhi’s ceasefire message to Islamabad on May 10.
Oval Office talks with Trump
During his White House visit, Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Munir were received by President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The 80-minute Oval Office meeting covered regional stability, counter-terrorism, intelligence cooperation, and trade expansion.
Shehbaz invited Trump to visit Pakistan and thanked him for supporting a fresh trade pact, expressing confidence that Trump’s “bold and decisive” leadership could further strengthen ties. He credited Trump for helping South Asia avoid “a major tragedy” by ensuring a ceasefire between Pakistan and India.
Diplomatic outreach with UN and China
While in New York, the Prime Minister also met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging stronger UN action against Indian terrorism in Pakistan and calling for a fair solution to the Kashmir dispute in line with Security Council resolutions. He further pressed for greater financial aid to countries hit hard by climate disasters.
Later, in a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Shehbaz received praise for his UN address, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to strengthening Pakistan-China cooperation.
