Former U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to visit Pakistan on September 18 as part of his upcoming tour of South Asia, diplomatic sources revealed.
The tour, which includes scheduled stops in both Pakistan and India, is part of Trump’s broader regional engagement strategy. According to sources, the former president is likely to visit New Delhi for the Quad leaders’ summit in September. A brief visit to Pakistan may occur either en route to India or on his return. However, an official confirmation from either side has not yet been made.
Trump Acknowledges Pakistan’s Strategic Role
The potential visit comes in the wake of a high-level meeting between Donald Trump and Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, held recently at the White House. During their one-on-one meeting in the Cabinet Room, Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s strategic importance in regional peace, especially amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel.
“Pakistan understands Iran better than we do — they’re a key player in regional peace,” Trump said, speaking to reporters after the meeting. He confirmed that the two leaders discussed the Iran-Israel situation and Pakistan’s potential role in de-escalation efforts.
Luncheon in Honour of Asim Munir
Following the meeting, Trump hosted a luncheon in honor of Field Marshal Munir at the White House. A spokesperson stated that the event was meant to recognize Pakistan’s contributions to regional stability and to appreciate General Munir’s efforts in easing recent Pakistan-India tensions.
“It’s an honour to meet Field Marshal Asim Munir. I thanked him for not letting things spiral into war,” Trump remarked, referring to the recent flare-up in cross-border tensions that was resolved diplomatically.
Reviving US-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue
The Trump-Munir meeting is being hailed in Islamabad as a major diplomatic milestone, marking a possible revival of the U.S.-Pakistan strategic dialogue, which has been relatively dormant in recent years.
Further engagements are expected, with General Munir scheduled to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pat Hegseth in the coming days. These meetings are seen as part of a broader effort to reset relations and enhance military and economic cooperation.
Trade Talks Underway
Trump also confirmed that preliminary discussions are underway on a potential trade agreement involving both Pakistan and India. “We’re in early talks on trade — Pakistan’s concerns are being heard,” he said, without providing further details.
Appreciating Munir’s diplomatic approach, Trump added, “General Asim has played a strong role in lowering Pak-India tensions. We appreciate his leadership.”
While the final itinerary is yet to be confirmed, Trump’s anticipated visit to Pakistan is being closely watched by regional analysts and diplomatic circles alike.
