Pakistan’s top javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem could not rise to expectations at the World Athletics Championship 2025, bowing out of the medal race after an underwhelming performance in the final on Thursday.

The eagerly awaited contest brought Arshad and India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra head-to-head once again, rekindling their fierce rivalry that has captivated fans on both sides of the border.

In his opening throw, Arshad managed a distance of 82.73 meters. In contrast, the early lead was taken by the United States’ Curtis Thompson, who reached 86.67m, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters achieved 84.59m. Chopra also began strong with 83.65m, while fellow Indian Sachin Yadav impressed with 86.27m.

Arshad missed his second attempt entirely, while Peters improved to 87.38m and Germany’s Julian Weber secured 86.11m. Chopra registered 84.03m on his second throw, maintaining his challenge in the early rounds.

Arshad followed with 82.75m on his third attempt but fouled on the fourth, sealing his fate in the competition. Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott surged ahead with a massive 88.16m in his fourth attempt.

With only the top eight advancing, both Chopra and Arshad failed to qualify, finishing outside medal contention. Arshad placed 10th overall with his best throw of 82.75m, while Chopra’s top mark of 84.03m also fell short.

Arshad’s message to fans

Before the competition, Arshad had asked fans to keep him in their prayers. Supporters across Pakistan rallied behind him, showing immense encouragement despite the disappointing outcome.

The championship final is set for September 18, where the top qualifiers will battle for gold. For many, this year’s contest between Arshad Nadeem and Neeraj Chopra carried significance far beyond sport, symbolizing the fierce yet respectful rivalry between two nations.
