ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) —  Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) President Tariq Bugti on Wednesday announced his resignation, citing financial constraints and what he described as the Pakistan Sports Board’s (PSB) failure to release funds in time for the national team’s tour of Australia.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Bugti said the federation did not have sufficient resources to independently cover travel and logistical expenses for the team’s participation in the FIH Pro League. He maintained that, on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the PSB was required to release the necessary funds promptly, but delays created serious difficulties for the squad during the Australia tour.

He alleged that payments for hotel bookings in Australia were not made on time, resulting in logistical problems for players and officials. Mr Bugti said he personally visited the PSB office to seek immediate disbursement of funds but was told the process could take up to two months.

The outgoing PHF chief appealed to the prime minister and Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir to constitute a committee to investigate the matter and establish the facts.

Mr Bugti also announced a two-year ban on national team captain Ammad Shakeel Butt, accusing him of threatening fellow players and running a campaign against the federation’s management. He said the PHF had already decided a day earlier to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the captain over alleged misconduct.

Meanwhile, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Inter-Provincial Coordination Rana Sanaullah said a three-member inquiry committee formed by the PSB had completed its investigation and submitted its report to the prime minister. Sources said the committee’s findings held the PHF accountable.

The controversy surfaced after videos circulated on social media showing members of the national team staying in substandard accommodation during the Australia tour.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took notice of the matter and ordered an inquiry.

Upon arrival at Lahore airport earlier this week, captain Ammad Shakeel Butt confirmed that reports of poor arrangements were accurate. He alleged mismanagement and mental harassment by team officials and the PHF, claiming players were made to carry out menial tasks — including cleaning kitchens and washrooms, washing dishes and laundering their clothes — before attending training sessions and matches.

The episode has sparked renewed debate over governance and financial management in Pakistan hockey.
