ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday firmly denied rumors circulating on social media about a ban on YouTube in Pakistan, clarifying that no such action has been taken.
In an official statement, the PTA said confusion had arisen due to the resurfacing of an outdated press release from 2012, which referenced a past shutdown of YouTube following Supreme Court orders.
“The press release from September 2012 is being wrongly shared in the current context,” the PTA said. “It is outdated and has no relevance to the present situation.”
The authority emphasized that it has issued no directives to block or suspend YouTube or any other social media platform at this time. The public was urged to rely only on verified PTA platforms—its website and official social media accounts—for accurate updates.
The 2012 YouTube ban was imposed during the tenure of then-Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf in response to mass protests over the controversial film Innocence of Muslims. PTA confirmed that the ban and its related notice are no longer applicable.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, India has recently banned over two dozen Pakistani YouTube channels, accusing them of spreading “provocative” content after an attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
