(WEB DESK) — Five individuals have been arrested in the central Iranian city of Yazd on charges of espionage and alleged collaboration with Israel, according to international reports on Saturday.
Iranian state media claim the individuals were detained for taking photographs and sharing sensitive information with Israeli authorities. The arrests come at a time of heightened hostilities between the two countries, with Iran and Israel effectively in a state of war.
These developments follow a dramatic escalation in military conflict. Early Friday morning, Israel reportedly initiated a large-scale offensive by launching airstrikes on multiple targets inside Iran. The strikes focused on the residences of senior military leaders, as well as strategic military and nuclear facilities.
In response, Iran fired over 200 missiles in a retaliatory barrage against Israel, an operation that remains ongoing.
Among the casualties of the Israeli attacks were six Iranian scientists, along with several high-ranking military officials. Those reported killed include the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, General Hossein Salami; Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, General Mohammad Bagheri; and Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, head of the Khatam al-Anbia Headquarters.
No additional details about the arrested individuals in Yazd have been made public. The situation continues to unfold against the backdrop of one of the most severe confrontations between Iran and Israel in recent years.
