LAHORE (RNN TV) — A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Lahore and several other cities in Punjab on Tuesday, prompting residents to rush outdoors in fear. No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the quake originated at a depth of 14 kilometres, with its epicentre located 25 kilometres from Lahore. Tremors were also felt in Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Muridke, and Kamoke.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) stated that its machinery and personnel have been placed on high alert to respond to any potential aftershocks. The provincial control room and district emergency operation centres are operating round the clock. Citizens can report any damage via the PDMA’s emergency helpline 1129.
Pakistan lies on a tectonically active zone, where the Indian and Eurasian plates collide, making it prone to frequent seismic activity.
In recent months, Karachi has experienced heightened seismic disturbances, with 49 mild tremors recorded last month alone. Experts attribute this to renewed activity along the Landhi Fault Line, which is believed to be undergoing a natural reactivation phase after decades of dormancy.
Earlier this year, other regions including Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and northern Punjab witnessed several moderate quakes. On May 10, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad and parts of KP, while similar seismic events occurred on April 12 and April 16, affecting cities like Peshawar, Mardan, Attock, and Chakwal.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely and urge citizens to stay alert and follow safety protocols during aftershocks.
