ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for Azerbaijan on Thursday to participate in the two-day 17th ECO Summit, themed “New ECO Vision for a Sustainable and Climate Resilient Future,” being held in Khankendi.
Leading Pakistan’s delegation at the summit, the prime minister will highlight Pakistan’s views on pressing regional and global challenges and reaffirm the country’s commitment to the ECO Vision 2025.
During the summit, PM Shehbaz is expected to advocate for greater intra-regional trade, improved transport connectivity, strengthened energy cooperation, and sustainable development initiatives across member states. Additionally, he will hold bilateral meetings with other ECO leaders on the sidelines to discuss issues of mutual interest.
Pakistan, together with Iran and Türkiye, was a founding member of the Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) established in 1964, which was later renamed the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in 1985.
Today, the ECO comprises 10 member countries, whose combined regional trade volume stands at $76 billion. The organization plays a pivotal role in boosting trade and investment across a vast geographic span—linking north to south, east to west, and bridging Asia with Europe, Eurasia, and the Arab world.
In recent years, the ECO has increasingly served as a platform for economic diplomacy and regional collaboration. Notably, Pakistan hosted the 13th ECO Summit in 2017, during which member states endorsed and adopted the ECO Vision 2025 to guide the bloc’s strategic direction.
