LAHORE (RNN TV) — The 87th death anniversary of the great poet, philosopher, and thinker of the East, Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal, is being observed today (Monday) to remember his efforts and services in the creation of a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent.

Born in Sialkot on November 9, 1877, Allama Iqbal is honored as Pakistan’s national poet. He is widely known by titles such as Mufakkir-e-Pakistan (The Thinker of Pakistan), Shair-e-Mashriq (The Poet of the East), and Hakeem-ul-Ummat (The Sage of the Muslim Ummah). He played a key role in promoting the idea of unity and awareness among Muslims and is credited with presenting the vision that eventually led to the formation of Pakistan in 1947.

Iqbal was a leading literary figure who wrote extensively in both Urdu and Persian. Some of his most famous books include Asrar-e-Khudi, Payam-e-Mashriq, Bang-e-Dara, Bal-e-Jibril, Zarb-e-Kalim, and Armughan-e-Hijaz.

Through his poetry and philosophy, Iqbal inspired the Muslim youth to believe in independence, self-respect, and self-reliance. He is seen as a true guide and benefactor of the Muslim world.

To honor his legacy, various educational, cultural, social, and political institutions are holding special events today to highlight his teachings, life, and contribution to the Muslim community of South Asia.

Allama Iqbal’s poetry has been translated into many languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, and he is respected as a global philosopher and Sufi poet of the modern era.

Sadly, he passed away on April 21, 1938, nearly a decade before Pakistan gained independence.
