PM-Bilawal-Canal

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) — In response to growing domestic opposition and escalating tensions following India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), the federal government on Thursday announced a halt to the controversial canals project until a consensus is reached at the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at a joint press conference with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, said the decision was made following a detailed meeting between the PPP and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

“The PPP and PML-N have jointly agreed that no new canal will be constructed until a mutual understanding is achieved in the CCI. The federal government will not move forward on this issue without provincial consensus,” the premier stated.

He added that a CCI meeting has been scheduled for May 2, during which the parties’ collective stance would be officially supported.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari expressed appreciation for the prime minister’s willingness to listen to concerns raised by the PPP and various segments of society. He said the prime minister’s decision addressed key objections raised by those opposing the project.

“We are not making a final decision today,” Bilawal emphasized, “but reaffirming that without consensus, no new canals will be built. I welcome the prime minister’s openness and look forward to the upcoming CCI session.”

Bilawal also condemned India’s move to suspend the IWT, calling it illegal and inhumane. “We will not only protest within Pakistan but also present our case on international platforms to counter India’s unjust actions,” he said.

The PPP chairman thanked the prime minister for engaging constructively and said he looked forward to continued cooperation on national issues.
