RNN (WEB DESK) — The United States has called on both India and Pakistan to seek a “responsible resolution” amid escalating tensions in South Asia, following a deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, India.
Speaking at a press briefing, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate conversations with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Bruce noted that President Donald Trump reaffirmed the United States’ strong support for India during a recent call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The President expressed firm solidarity with India against terrorism, assuring Prime Minister Modi of our full support,” Bruce said. “We remain in close contact with both governments, engaging at multiple levels.”
During his call with Secretary Rubio, Prime Minister Sharif conveyed Pakistan’s position on the rising regional tensions and categorically denied any involvement in the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people. He also demanded an impartial, transparent, and credible investigation into the incident.
India has directly blamed Pakistan for the attack, an accusation Islamabad rejects. In response to the incident, India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which governs the sharing of water from the Indus River system. Pakistan, in turn, has closed its airspace to Indian aircraft.
The U.S. is urging both nations to de-escalate and seek peaceful dialogue amid growing concerns over regional stability.
