ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) — Despite promising signs from influential quarters encouraging talks between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the federal government, PTI chairman Imran Khan has once again rejected the idea of dialogue. Instead, he has directed his party to focus on mass mobilization and street protests.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur recently conveyed to Khan and other PTI leaders that there were positive signals from the establishment indicating readiness to engage in negotiations with the government. However, Khan refused to entertain talks that do not involve direct engagement with the establishment itself.
Sources within PTI say Khan remains convinced that public demonstrations and pressure from the streets will yield better results than political negotiations. This approach marks a setback for attempts aimed at resolving the ongoing political deadlock through dialogue.
Earlier attempts at dialogue have also collapsed amid disagreements. In November, PTI’s decision to push its rally into Islamabad’s D-Chowk reportedly alienated potential mediators and hardened government resistance.
Despite a recent offer by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the National Assembly floor to hold talks, Khan withdrew his initial acceptance, citing misunderstandings and maintaining that talks without establishment involvement are futile.
Meanwhile, backchannel efforts appear to be underway through a group of US-based Pakistani doctors visiting the country, who may play a role in easing tensions.
Political analysts warn that Khan’s continued focus on street agitation risks closing doors on possible legal and political compromises that could benefit his party, especially ahead of crucial court rulings in upcoming cases.
With the situation intensifying, it’s unclear if dialogue will be revived anytime soon.
