An Air India flight bound for London crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing more than 200 people in what is the worst aviation disaster globally in a decade. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had 242 passengers and crew on board.

Authorities confirmed at least one survivor, identified as British-Indian passenger Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who described hearing a loud noise shortly after takeoff before the crash. He sustained injuries but managed to escape the wreckage, which fell onto a residential area and a medical college hostel near Ahmedabad airport during lunchtime.

Police recovered 204 bodies from the site, which included passengers and people on the ground. Among the dead was Vijay Rupani, former chief minister of Gujarat. Over 50 injured people are receiving treatment in hospitals.

The crash occurred just 30 seconds after takeoff. The aircraft sent a Mayday call but then lost contact. Air India and Indian officials are investigating the cause, while emergency response continues.

The tragedy has drawn condolences worldwide, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Ahmedabad Airport has suspended operations, and the Adani Group, which operates the airport, pledged full support to rescue efforts.

This crash marks the first fatal accident involving the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, one of the newest commercial aircraft models, first flown commercially in 2011. Air India was privatized and merged with Vistara under Tata Group ownership in recent years.
