ISLAMABAD (RNN TV) – A group of US-based Pakistani doctors and businessmen, previously involved in quiet diplomacy related to Imran Khan, has returned to Pakistan as part of renewed backchannel efforts to seek relief for the jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder.
Sources say the delegation, which met with senior officials and Khan during a prior visit, is currently in Lahore. However, they have yet to secure a meeting with Khan on this trip, and it remains unclear whether any engagement with top officials has taken place. The coming week is seen as crucial for potential developments.
These unofficial visits are part of ongoing efforts by PTI sympathisers within the diaspora to influence the legal and political fate of Khan. However, despite persistent informal outreach in recent months, no significant progress has been made.
Insiders suggest that progress is being hampered by the conduct of PTI’s social media operations and its international chapters, particularly in the US and UK. The party’s consistent criticism of the military on social platforms and lobbying abroad has reportedly deepened institutional distrust and complicated reconciliation efforts.
While the military leadership has publicly maintained its stance of non-involvement in political negotiations, some PTI leaders continue to seek indirect engagement. However, sources note that ongoing digital campaigns against the military and allegations of misinformation have blocked any meaningful breakthrough.
Some members of PTI’s mid-level leadership acknowledge privately that the party’s aggressive posture has hindered chances of relief for Khan. There is growing internal realization that de-escalation — particularly online — is essential for constructive political dialogue.
Analysts suggest that PTI’s future prospects and Khan’s legal situation hinge on the party’s willingness to reduce confrontation, engage politically, and refrain from attacks on state institutions. As the diaspora delegation resumes quiet contacts, observers are watching closely to see if this signals a new chapter of reconciliation or another missed opportunity for the embattled party.
