ISLAMABD (RNN TV) — In Pakistan’s dynamic civil-military relationship, stability often depends on the rapport between the Prime Minister and the Army Chief.
Under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir, the military establishment has found a reliable partner in Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, not only trusting him but actively supporting his government.
A senior source described Shehbaz as “the best,” highlighting his ability to earn the military’s confidence through a combination of hard work, administrative discipline, diplomatic caution, and a deep understanding of Pakistan’s political landscape.
Behind closed doors, there is no ambiguity: the military views Shehbaz as the “best possible choice” to lead the country in times of political fragmentation and economic turbulence.
This trust is mutual. Shehbaz, both publicly and privately, has consistently expressed admiration for General Munir’s professionalism, discipline, and national vision. On several occasions, he has credited the military’s “unwavering support” for helping the government navigate the nation’s challenges.
Despite the prime minister’s public praise for the army chief, sources suggest that General Munir, too, speaks highly of Shehbaz within military circles. This rare mutual respect is seen as a stabilizing factor in a system that often struggles with mistrust between key power centers.
While some have speculated that Shehbaz’s performance may not have met the military’s expectations, well-informed sources strongly refute such claims.
Shehbaz, known as a “doer,” has long been a favored figure within the establishment. Even General (retd) Pervez Musharraf, who ousted Nawaz Sharif in a military coup, reportedly admired Shehbaz for his administrative acumen.
Shehbaz was considered the military’s first choice during the ouster of Nawaz’s last government. However, after his imprisonment for refusing to abandon his brother, the establishment shifted its allegiance to Imran Khan. The events that followed are well known.
