U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that a delegation from Pakistan will visit Washington next week to hold trade discussions, as the South Asian nation seeks to avoid steep tariffs on its exports to the United States.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump revealed the upcoming talks, noting Pakistan’s attempt to reach an agreement following the imposition of new tariffs by the U.S. administration. Pakistan currently faces the possibility of up to 29% tariffs on its exports, largely due to its $3 billion trade surplus with the United States.

The trade talks come at a delicate time, as tensions between Pakistan and neighboring India have surged following days of intense military confrontation earlier this month—the most serious in decades. The two nuclear-armed countries exchanged artillery fire, launched fighter jets, and deployed drones during a four-day conflict that heightened international concerns over regional stability.

Commenting on the regional situation, Trump stated that any progress in trade negotiations with either country could be derailed if military hostilities continue. “I would have no interest in making a deal with Pakistan or India if they go to war,” he said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is also advancing its trade discussions with India. Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal recently visited Washington, where talks focused on finalizing a preliminary trade agreement expected by early July. As part of the negotiations, India is reportedly considering opening up over $50 billion worth of federal contracts to U.S. companies.

India, like Pakistan, is also facing U.S. tariffs, with some of its exports subject to duties as high as 26%. Both countries are now pushing to resolve trade issues with Washington in order to protect key economic interests.

The upcoming visit by the Pakistani delegation signals Islamabad’s willingness to engage in constructive dialogue amid both trade and geopolitical challenges.
